NB: Before you start this tutorial you should complete our tutorial on "How to create, save and publish an article in Joomla".  When you have that tutorial completed you can use the article you created in this tutorial.

How to create your own menus in Joomla

For this example I'm going to show you how to setup a menu called "MyJoomlaMenu".  We will then add a menu item to this menu called "MyArticle".


1: Login to the administration of your Joomla site.

2: From the menu select Menu > Menu Manager.

3: Click on the new icon on the toolbar menu.

4: Fill in the required fields as you desire. All fields can be filled in with the same name if you wish. See example below. Click save when done.

5: Your new menu should now be listed in the Menu Manager.  Now we want to add a menu item to our new menu.  Find your new menu and click on the add new menu items link. See below image.

6: Click on the new icon on the toolbar menu.

7: Now we must select a menu item type. In this example we are adding an article to our menu. To do this we will select Articles. See image below.

8: Under articles we will now select Article Layout as this menu item lets us display a single article.

9: Under Menu Details give your menu item a name. For this example we are using MyArticle. Display in should be set to your new menu ( In this example Display in is set to MyJoomlaMenu). Set Published to YES.

10: Under Parameters Basic Use the Select Article parameter to select your article. By clicking the select button it will list all articles. Click on the article you want to have under your menu item. In this example I am selecting the article titled "My New Article". Click the save icon to save your new menu item.  You should now see your new menu item listed under your new menu.

11: You should now see your new menu item listed under your new menu.
